FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is ceremonial matcha?

Ceremonial matcha is the highest grade of Japanese matcha: made from the first harvest's youngest leaves, stone-ground to a fine powder, and meant to be whisked with water and enjoyed on its own. Its signs are a vivid jade-green color, a sweet aroma, and smooth umami with no bitterness when it is prepared correctly.

What is the difference between ceremonial and culinary matcha?

Ceremonial matcha is made to be drunk straight — its color, aroma, and flavor carry the cup. Culinary matcha is blended for cooking and sweet drinks, with a stronger, more bitter profile designed to push through sugar and flour.

How much caffeine does matcha have?

Matcha contains roughly 30–35 mg of caffeine per gram, so a 2 g serving gives you about 60–70 mg — a little more than half a cup of coffee. But matcha also carries L-theanine, an amino acid that smooths that energy into calm, sustained focus, without the spike and crash.

How should I store my matcha?

Keep it in its tin, tightly sealed, away from light, heat and humidity. If the tin is still sealed, you can refrigerate it — let it come to room temperature before opening, so no condensation forms inside. Once opened, enjoy it within 4–6 weeks, when it is at its best. Always seal it well — matcha absorbs odors and moisture quickly.

How do I prepare it?

Sift, add water at 70–80 °C, whisk to a fine foam. The full step-by-step is on The Ritual page.
